Dandelions

Recently I've been looking at dandelions differently.

Instead of seeing weeds I've been seeing bright yellowness.

Cheery bright yellow!

And this is why ~ Chips

It was Chips who rushed out onto the patio and exclaimed

"Mummy, look at the beautiful yellow flowers.Who put these here?"

I went to see what he was talking about and found these dandelions

My first thought was to laugh and say, they are not flowers they are weeds but I stopped and asked him what he liked about them and he said the pretty colour.

And I looked again.

He was right,it was a pretty yellow and it's petals were soft and floaty and it was a survivor....it could grow anywhere.

Just because they are known as weeds do we all need to hate them?

To me it seemed a bit too close to home....

Flowers such as roses, daffodils, tulips were ok.

Whereas the simple dandelion was public enemy number one and thought of as wrong and not beautiful.

Society putting ideas into peoples heads of things that were beautiful and therefore right and a plain old dandelion was just a weed not needed, not beautiful, just something to get rid of and certainly not anything to be thought of as appealing.

In most peoples eyes weeds are no good and need pulling up. They are given no time at all and perhaps this is right,as I guess they grow where they are not wanted and upset a lot of people.

But does this make them wrong and not worthy?

I'm not so sure.

Because when I looked through my child's eyes I saw the brightness of the flower, the tenacity of it,the unexpected places that it grew and I began to smile.

And ever since my conversation with Chipmunk I have noticed dandelions more and each time I do I now smile.

Yet another thing Chips has taught me.

    1. Evening Tori!As normal I have taken a childs simple comment and twirled it around in my mind and come up with something deep!I did feel that way though,I see a lot of society judging things on their perceptions of perfect and I don't like it!Who are we to judge and all that malarkey! And I also like the colour yellow hence my blog title :-)

  5. So true! A weed is just any plant you don't want in the place where it grows, there is nothing intrinsically evil about it. I had a similar experience to yours just the other day, when we were out for a walk and my son exclaimed with great joy about the dandelions and picked me a whole bunch of them. They were just so lovely and yellow, it wasn't until I surveyed our garden (which is covered with them) that I remembered they were supposed to be Bad and I was meant to get rid of them.

    1. Yay Judith!Exactly! There is nothing evil about dandelions, its just that society frowns on them!In the wild they look lovely I think,so cheery and yellow!Kids can teach grown ups so much sometimes,if only grown ups would listen to them!

  6. Funny you should post this. I was out walking the other day and the grass alongside the path was full of bright yellow dandelions and I was thinking how bright and cheery it looked and what a shame it was that a tractor was going up and down cutting them down. It makes you think doesn't it, what makes something beautiful and what makes it a nuisance???? #PoCoLo

    1. Thats exactly what I have been pondering Lou and its quite weird isn't it?And sometimes it takes a child to innocently say something and it pings in your head and you think 'hang on,whys that' Iam the last of the deep thinkers tho!

  7. Great post! It seems to be a fantastic year for dandelions. I usually employ my two boys to pick them from the lawn but this year we've had the same thought as you. There's a particularly beautiful clump in amongst some red tulips which make a really jolly splash of colour. Great to find you through #PoCoLo

    1. Thanks Daisy!Same as I have been saying, sometimes a childs innocent comment makes you wonder 'why' Who decided dandelions were the root of all evil in the gardening world!I can understand people not wanting them everywhere but sometimes if we got pass societies perception of them we could see their cheery yellow colur on a Spring day and I think in the wild they look lovely.
I was thrilled to hear your story about the dandelions in your garden,so its not just me who is thinking they are not all baddity bad!
